Online Museum with OAC (Part 9): H.H. Princess Saisavali Bhiromya-the protector of Suan Sunandha

H.H. Princess Saisavali Bhiromya, Princess Suddhasininart, whose Thai full style in Romanized script is Pha Vimada Ther Phra Ong Chao Saisavali Bhiromya, Krom Phra Suddhasininart Piya Maharaj Padivarada, was born on Friday, 6th waning moon, the 9th lunar month, Year of the Pig, coresspending to 4th September 1863 in the Gregorian calendar. She is the daughter of H.R.H. Prince Ladavalya, Prince Bhumindra Bhakdi (head of the Ladavalya Royal Family) and Chao Chom Manda Chin (Chin, Grandmother of Royal Children, as latterly invested). Upon her birth, she was styled Mom Chao (Her Serene highness, a noble title bestowed on a ‘child of King’s son’), which coupled with a personal name became known as Mom Chao Sai, her maiden name’

H.H. Princess Saisavali Bhiromya, Princess Suddhasininart has two other sisters born to the same mother, namely: H.H, Princess Ubolratana Narinaga, Princess Argavoraraja Kalya (née Mom Chao Bua), and H.H. Princess Saovabhark Nariratana, (née Mom Chao Pio). She gave birth to His Majesty one son and three daughters; H.R.H. Prince Yugala Dighamabara, Prince of Lopburi, H.R.H. Princesss Nabhachorn Chamras Sri, H.R.H. Princess Malini Nobhadara, Princess of Sri Sajanalaya, and H.R.H. Princess Nibha Nobhadol, Princess of Udong.

H.H. Princess Saisavali Bhiromya, Princess Suaddhasininart was entrusted with supervising the royal kitchen throughout His Majesty King Chulalongkorn’s reign. Her all-round culinary skill was well recognized, as seen in the meticulous selection of raw ingredients and gourmet concoction of main-course dishes and dessert that enhances flavors and makes for aesthetic appeal to the eyes, much to the satisfaction of His Majesty King.

H.H. Princess Saisavali Bhiromya, Princess Suaddhasininart wanted to preserve the beauty of flowers that she planted around her mansion. For that reason, she had teachers from outside to teach the lady-in-waiting how to paint which under her supervision were exquisitely done as required in court lady circles. Right now, there are around 131 water painting sections in total.

She moved to reside at Suan Sunandha until she passed away here at age 66 on June 24th, 1929. We could infer that, her mansion was the large royal inner court and the culture centre of 2 kings’ reign. At the present, her mansion is the museum preserving Thai traditional Arts and Culture of nation.
